He Tipu Update
Seed Collection, Māra Kai, Nursery Kaimahi & Planting
Seed Collection
Seed collection efforts have been focused on geothermal kānuka (Kunzea tenuicaulis) from Tauhara Maunga. This unique, slow-growing, and prostrate species is found only in geothermal areas across our region. Seeds gathered will help re-establish kānuka around local power stations where it once thrived.
Māra Kai
A cooler, unsettled summer meant a slower start to the growing season, but harvests are now well underway. Our māra kai technician, Tereki Vakatini, has completed two successful kamokamo harvests with more to come. Rīwai and pumpkins are around a month away and will soon be available, alongside fresh Ōpepe milk, for whānau collection at the He-Akina office.
Nursery Kaimahi
Our nursery team of three are continuing to grow in skill and confidence. Later this month, they’ll sit their Soil Properties unit standards as part of their Level 3 Horticulture studies. This will be their first opportunity to connect with other horticulture students at the Open Polytechnic in Rotorua, sharing learning and gaining new insights into soil health—an important focus for both He Tipu and Taupō operations.
He Tipu Planting Schedule
The planting season, which began in October 2025, is drawing to a close. Only a small amount of planting remains, with most plants now established in containers and growing well for future sale.
