Quick Tips for Planting Kamokamo
Kamokamo is a taonga Māori vegetable best grown in the warmth of spring and summer. Here’s how to get your seeds started:
When to Plant:
Wait until all frosts have passed and the soil is warm (around 15–18°C).
In most areas, October–November is ideal.
How to Plant:
Choose a sunny, well-drained spot and enrich with compost.
Sow 2–3 seeds per mound, about 2–5 cm deep and 1 m apart.
Keep soil moist (not soggy) and mulch to hold in moisture.
Thin to the strongest seedling once sprouted.
Growing & Harvesting:
Let vines spread or guide them along a fence or trellis.
Pick young fruit to eat like courgettes, or let them mature for storage.
Save seeds from a fully mature kamokamo for next season.
Tip: Kamokamo love warmth, sun, and plenty of space — nurture them and they’ll reward you with kai all summer long.
